SOUTH BEACH. Most bars don't include an outdoor pool on the beach ­ that's just one of the perks that makes the Clevelander a popular oceanside destination. The raucous and splashy atmosphere is quintessential South Beach, and the crowd makes it feel like Spring Break all summer long. Don't worry about a dress code ­ bathing suits and flip-flops are the order of the day. The music runs the gamut, from rock to dance, and live music or DJs are sometimes featured.

Coral Gables' answer to the South Beach crush, this popular cafe is a veritable magnet for upscale young professionals on weekday evenings. The work day done, they gather for intriguing cocktails and socializing, eager to slough off the cares of necessity ­ after a quick stop-off at home to freshen up, of course. If food's in order, the menu offers appetizers, pastas, seafood, steaks and sandwiches. Live jazz adds to the ambience, and on Friday nights, the party even spills out into the streets ­ with police approval. Should you desire a VIP experience, the elegant Black Room is a members-only refuge.

LITTLE HAVANA. Small, cozy and the epicenter of Latin music in Miami, Hoy Como Ayer brings past and present together beautifully. Its name translates as "today as yesterday," and from the photos of legendary singers to Fuacata! (a weekly event that merges traditional tunes with electronic effects), the idea is at the club's forefront. The music's authenticity and high quality often provoke dancing, and big-name vocalists have been known to make surprise appearances. In addition, perfectly mixed mojitos fondly recall Cuba, and a brief menu of Latin foods maintains the pleasurable theme.

DOWNTOWN. If the prospect of braving SoBe's attitude and traffic are less than appealing, check out this eclectic Design District club. Devoted to indie, alternative and rock, it's a comfortable, casual hangout for listening to great bands or just dancing. In the main room, bands perform and clubgoers take to the floor while an outdoor area caters to folks who want an even more laid-back atmosphere. Bands from the area trade off with national groups, and theme nights showcase New Wave, Latin, and more.

SOUTH BEACH. Stride into this smooth, sultry bar dressed to kill. Order a classic drink in a highball glass and take in the smoky, atmospheric surroundings. Live music is a rarity in South Beach, but this popular outpost has earned a reputation for putting on great jazz shows, with styles ranging from classic to acid. If you aren't enjoying the experimental performances downstairs, you can always head upstairs to the tiny loft, where DJs spin dance and house. Impromptu celebrity performances are a tradition at this unpretentious, laid-back lounge. Be sure to the Brazilian jazz show the last Thursday of every month.
